In 1777, the Articles of Confederation was adopted. Also known as a "league of friendship," and America's first set of laws.
Not officially ratified until March 1, 1781, once all 13 states agreed, the Articles created a very weak national government in which the most powers was vested in the states. In 1787, the Constitution Convention began in Philadelphia and the Constitution was drafted. The following year on June 21, 1788, the Constitution was ratified! Later that year, the Bill of Rights proposed by James Madison and was approved by Congress. Three years later, the The Bill of Rights were ratified. They are the first 10 Amendments Constitution for a total of 27.
